"MEC-Pirna- gang is setting the course"
A travel report from the town of the Olsen gang
We proudly received an invitation to the largest railway exhibition at the grounds of the Valby Halls in Copenhagen in Denmark from the Head of the Danish Model Railway Union, Ib Damm, at the “Experience Model Railway” 2006. |
We gladly accepted the invitation. Now, it was on schedule to plan the trip. Even for us, a club which is quite experienced with traveling, this was really something new. To book a ferry, rent a van, calculate driving periods, and finally how much money should be exchanged.. All of that required organization in more detail, far beyond what we were ever used to. |
|
A big help to us was Martin Kristensen, who is not only a member of the Danish TT-club, but also speaks a fabulous Saxon dialect. |
On Wednesday the 24 th August 2006 we picked up the lorry of the company Tillig Modellbahnen from Sebnitz, which kindly provided it to us. We went to Dohma already loaded with a part of the exhibition, where our TT-model, all accessories, food for the trip and all other little things were loaded. The Friday before, the model had already been cleaned and safely packed in boxes. |

After a few hours of restless sleep, Lutz and Gerhard left for the Overseas port Rostock at one o'clock in the morning. The remaining 6 travelers started their tour at 3a.m. After a calm drive everyone arrived at the ferry port. The ferry left punctually towards Gedser at 11a.m. After a short sightseeing tour on the ferry we enjoyed potato salad and fried meat balls for lunch. After a trip of 1 hour and forty-five minutes we arrived at the Danish coast. Now, our crew, consisting of us, a lorry and a van, just had to manage the remaining 150km to Copenhagen together in a convoy. |
In the afternoon we met Martin as agreed in the Valby Hall and after a warm welcome and awarded with a bottle of beer, the lorry was parked and we traveled to Martin's flat in the city of Copenhagen . This was Heike's, Lutz's Olaf's and Rene's accommodation for the next couple of days. After a short rest we went to Martin's friend and model train expert Poul-Erik. |
Poul-Erik's little house in the outskirts of Copenhagen accommodated Werner, Peter, Dirk and Gerhard- the remaining 4 of the ‘Pirna MEC- gang'. In the evening we enjoyed a barbeque and a nice chat about the country and its people. To our astonishment we found German literature on model trains on Danish bookshelves. We got to know that Poul-Erik had already visited our club in the 70s and he still had photos of that meeting. We had to say ‘Good Bye' not too late, because a straining day was over and another straining to come. |
|
Friday morning we met in the Valby Halls at 8. While the lorry was being unloaded, Heike was preparing our breakfast. After this energy push, assembling of the model was no problem. Soon Ib Damm visited us and said hello with a little glass of herb liqueur. The Danish press showed interest and stayed with us for one hour, asking questions and watching us working, taking photos and they were interested in our club activities in Germany . Our club house, fixed on our model, showed likewise our activities. Next morning half a page was to be read in the local newspaper. When the Danish clubs and traders arrived in the afternoon, we had nearly finished our model. The little, but smart Tillig stand had already been assembled and provided some views into the world of TT- models. |
Late in the evening we had time to get to know some people and to get into contact with each other. There were no language problems, as nearly any Dane was able to speak German. The design of landscape was very interesting to us, as it reflected this typically Danish landscape with its little cute Danish houses, windmills and wide fields. |

Saturday morning – the opening of the Fair, honored guests as the Austrian and German Ambassador as well as the Cultural Mayor of Copenhagen came as guests. Rene thanked for the invitation to Copenhagen as well as being granted the possibility of being an exhibitor and wished all participants a good fair. The Chairman of the Danish Railroad Model Club opened the event. The hall was quickly filled with visitors. Our TT- Club model was granted great admiration. The orderly assembling, the variety and large number of trains were always awarded. But our N- size seemed to be a bit exotic. Some were not quite sure whether it was ‘N' or not. Many elderly Swedes, Danes or Norwegians were euphoric about Rokal, Zeuke or the Berlin TT- railway model of their childhood and were really happy about two TT-models; therefore the Danish TT-model was highly frequented as well. On this wonderful model many little details were to be seen. |
On the exhibition evening we got to know some Danish food specialties as well. We tried everything; some dishes were spicy in a different way but very delicious. |
Sunday the last day of the exhibition was a bit calmer, as all trains were running according to schedule and without any faults. Again, we were able to have interesting conversations with visitors. We were talking to visitors who had been to the former GDR and had worked there. Dresden, the Saxon Switzerland or the Erzgebirge with its narrow-gauge railway was well-known to a lot of them. Some visitors even enquired about the ‘Flood of the Century' in 2002 or were interested in the reconstruction of the Church of Our Ladies. It was always a very friendly and convenient atmosphere. This was also the day to exchange addresses with clubs. Maybe we will meet again one day. |
As we are a very reliable and experienced team with dismantling and packing, the lorry was packed after only 3 hours. |
On that evening, we were using the time and sat together with Martin and Poul-Erik and conveniently chatted about past exhibitions. Werner was able to tell a lot of funny stories. It was hard to say ‘Goodbye', but at least our drivers should have a bit of sleep before the long trip. |
|
Monday morning- 4a.m.- the alarm clocks were ringing. At 6 a.m. we said goodbye to Martin near the Valby Halls, and it was not that easy as we had found a good friend. But there was a promise: to meet again, when Martin was visiting his grandparents in Dresden the following Christmas. We arrived at the ferry punctually at 8 and breakfast was very good and even well digested despite the rough sea. At 5p.m. we finally arrived back home. Until the lorry reached homeland, we had already reported about our experiences to the ones who had to stay at home. |
For unloading, many other members and their relatives helped, so that it was possible to hug family and friends very soon. Straining, but wonderful days found their end in this way. |
It was a wonderful trip. Our model was liked and we hope that TT- models will find more supporters in Denmark in the near future. Our friends of the Danish TT-club though were able to find new members for their group. |
Unfotunately we did not see much of Copenhagen , but this can be done next time. But we have met wonderful people, from whom we got to know a lot about Denmark and its people and their lives. |
In two year's time the next exhibition will take place in Copenhagen , due to the fact, that next year's will be held in Jütland. Who ever wants, can combine holiday in Denmark with model railroading. |
Further pictures and impressions on our trip to Copenhagen can be found in our picture gallery. |
